Epic historical films are usually coined from a historical or a mythical event and add a big setting and expensive costumes, plus an expansive musical score with a star-studded cast, which would make them among the most expensive of films to produce.
Nigerian filmmakers have taken their time and interest to make epic movies to strengthen the Nollywood movie industry of the country.
For this weekend’s TFC Lists, here are five Nollywood epic movies for you to watch.
1. KING OF THIEVES
‘King of Thieves’ (Agesinkole) is an epic tale of Agesinkole, an all-powerful Bandit and his reign of terror in the prosperous Kingdom of Ajeromi. Concerned by his pillaging, the kingdom moves to destroy him, through the hunters, witches and priests, thus beginning this adventurous saga of revenge, bravery and glory.
‘King of Thieves’ is a Femi Adebayo film directed by Tope Adebayo and is now showing on Prime video after its theatrical run.
2. THE FIGURINE (ARAROMIRE)
The figurine, a supernatural suspense thriller film written by Kemi Adesoye, is a 2009 movie produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan. The story is about two friends who discover a mystical sculpture that bestows seven years of good luck on anyone that encounters it, but dark consequences come in the years that follow.
Araromire is currently showing on Netflix.
2. THE MYSTIC RIVER
The Mystic River is a Nigerian dramatic series produced by Rogers Ofime, and streaming on Netflix. The series started on 14 May 2021. It consists of one season of six episodes, for now, streaming on Netflix, but the series is said to consist of 26 episodes in all.
The movie stars popular Nigerian Actors Jide Kosoko, Dele Odule, Lota Chukwu, Joke Muyiwa and a few others, the film follows the story of how a pregnant woman vanishes in a remote Nigerian village for over decades, as a doctor with a child finds herself extremely close to uncovering dangerous secrets.
4. LOTANNA
A young boy discovers that he has to offset a debt owed by his late father. He goes through a myriad of trials and challenges that stand to break him or make him; aided by an unbreakable resolve to succeed, a sonorous voice, friends, and enemies.
The 2017 Nigerian drama film, directed by Toka McBaror stars Chris Okagbue as the title character.
The film had its worldwide release on April 8, 2017, and is currently streaming on Prime Video.
5. THE BRIDGE
The Bridge is a 2017 Nigerian film written by Shola Dada, produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan. A Yoruba prince and a young lady from a prominent Igbo family face tribal prejudice and parental pressure when they secretly wed.
The movie stars Chidinma Ekile, Demola Adedoyin, Tina Mba, Ayo Mogaji, Zack Orji, Bayo Salami and is streaming on Netflix.
